SIBUR is one of the world’s leading producers of petrochemical products and one of the most profitable and fastest growing companies in the global petrochemical industry. It is also the leading Russian producer of styrene butadiene styrene thermoplastic elastomers known as SBS.
It is a great satisfaction for us to be able to represent a company of such great reference. Well, at this moment we can announce that SIBUR and EMSA have signed an exclusive contract for the distribution of SBS for the markets of Spain and Portugal.
SBS are a thermoplastic elastomer of synthetic origin. It is a very characteristic material since at room temperature it behaves like an elastomer, but when it’s heated, it can be processed as plastic.
Butadiene was first polymerized in 1910 by the Russian chemist Sergei Vasilievich Lebedev. Due to his discoveries, the Soviet Union became the first country to achieve substantial industrial production of the material in the late 1930s.
The widespread use of SBS is explained by its high properties and technical performance. Among them, it stands out for offering an incredible coefficient of surface friction ideal in many applications, great elastic deformation returning to the original state after deformation, very good tensile strength, excellent behavior at low temperatures, good electrical properties and very good processability, to be highlighted some of them.
The scope of application is very diverse:
- Modification of asphalt for roads; greatly improves the high temperature flow properties and elasticity of asphalt, and at the same time improves the lower temperature properties, increasing the durability and strength of roads.
- Building industry and waterproofing as asphalt sheets.
- Automobile industry.
- Footwear industry.
- Adhesives industry.
- Electrical industry.
- Rubber or textile industry.
- Other industries such as toys, household item profiles, gaskets and sealants, technical items …
