Challenge or Initial Need
At Agroalkimia, we faced an increasingly demanding agricultural reality marked by adverse climatic conditions that repeat year after year: extreme temperatures, drought, low light, salinity, and intense UV-B radiation. This situation limited crop efficiency and threatened yields. Therefore, we needed a functional ingredient that would strengthen our plant nutrition solutions, helping crops withstand abiotic stress without compromising the sustainability of our agricultural practices.
The main challenge we aimed to solve involved various forms of salt and water stress, exacerbated by the effects of climate change. By acting as an osmolyte, BetaSol regulates water influx and efflux in the cytoplasm, preventing the denaturation of functional proteins. Each betaine molecule carries up to 3.6 water molecules, which is crucial in scenarios of water deficit or high salinity.
Specific Applications
- Fertigation: BetaSol was applied together with other nutritional solutions through short, scheduled irrigation events.
- Direct Application: it was used at doses tailored to each crop’s needs, applied in a localized manner.
This technology was implemented in rose and summer flower crops in Ecuador, where climatic conditions pose a constant challenge.
We have also successfully tested it on horticultural crops and potatoes, where it has demonstrated significant improvements in nutrient uptake and resistance to abiotic stress.
