In the formulation of paints and coatings, the current challenge is clear: maintaining or improving performance, optimizing costs and reducing the environmental impact of formulations. Sustainability can no longer be addressed as a theoretical concept, but as a measurable technical criterion, supported by data.
In this context, our principal VERD, whose coalescent VERD CA-18 is distributed exclusively in Spain by EMSA Tecnología Química, follows a very specific approach: applying circular economy principles to product formulation and validating each development through technical testing under real formulation conditions.
Lower emissions: quantified CO₂ reduction
One of the key pillars of the work carried out by VERD with VERD CA-18 is the measurement of the environmental impact associated with its use in formulation. Based on comparative studies between petrochemical-based coalescent and the biocircular coalescent VERD CA-18, the data show a reduction of approximately 1,985 kg of CO₂ per tonne of coalescent.
When translated to the final formulation, considering a 1 wt.% dosage, this represents a reduction of around 20 kg of CO₂ per tonne of formulated paint. This figure makes it possible to directly assess the real impact of replacing a petrochemical coalescent with the biocircular coalescent VERD CA-18 in paint formulations.
Equal or superior performance, validated in real formulations
Reducing emissions would be meaningless without rigorous technical validation. For this reason, VERD CA-18 has been evaluated in commercial emulsions and complete paint formulations, covering different polymer systems and PVC ranges.
Testing focused on key parameters such as minimum film formation temperature (MFFT ≤ 5 °C), viscosity and pH stability, and wet scrub resistance. The results confirm equal or superior performance compared to conventional coalescent.
Lower cost: efficiency applied to formulation
The data also show that, in many formulations, equal or improved performance can be achieved with lower dosages of VERD CA-18. In addition, the lower density of the product and, in certain systems, a reduced need for associative thickeners to reach comparable viscosity profiles contribute further to formulation efficiency.
This combination of factors has a direct impact on overall formulation cost, reinforcing the economic viability of this approach.
The results confirm that it is possible to move towards more sustainable formulations without compromising technical performance or costs. The coalescent VERD CA-18, distributed exclusively by Emsa Tecnología Química in Spain, is supported by measurable and comparable results that enable formulators to make decisions based on solid technical criteria.
